Using Apps in the Classroom

Tools For Teachers

image

Tools for teachers is a resource for teachers that provides irreplaceable tools for creative educators, This apps assist teachers with planning out their weekly schedules, and ideas for various projects. Tools for teacher is within the app iTunes U . You select the educators tab then there is an icon that states tools for teachers. Whenever I noticed this I instantly saw some apps that I have become familiar with through the summer being enrolled in DED318. The future is teaching at schools that have one to one iPads. Therefore it is very important to be knowledgeable about what these different apps could be used for throughout the school year.

image

The First app that I downloaded was Nearpod. This app can be access through iPhone, iPads and mac computers. This app is a grade way to keep your students engaged through the lesson. You can display the lesson on every students iPad. The teacher has access to what is on every students iPad at all times. You can’t also conduct formative assessments by placing a few questions throughout your near pod lesson. That way the teacher is able to monitor the understand of all the Students by gaging wether or not the students answered the questions correctly.

image

Show me is an interactive whiteboard app. This app you are able to apply your own pictures and prewritten math assignments. You can record various voice recordings that go along with this lesson. When doing a lesson over an interactive whiteboard the students can go back and review the information to help them study for their assessments. This app could also be on the student side of things. Students could create group projects using this app and present their work to the class in a fun interactive way that utilized technology.

image

Khan Academy is a great app for teachers and students. Students can use this app to get help with their math homework while they are at home when they may not have anyone to help them with their homework. Khan Academy is very easy to use. You simple select what you are working on and their are videos that walk you through example problems to help work through the procedures. There are various examples for every lesson that Khan Academy provides. This app could also be side from the teachers benefit as well. The teacher could view how they are teaching these new methods that way the student is familiar with the process. The students and the teachers benefit from using this app.

Inspiring lesson Ideas Week 7

image

Within the iTunes U app by just selecting educators this app provides you access to thirty different types of lesson plans that very between all grades. This is a valuable source for educators that are looking for a quick easy way to apply technology within the classroom. This lesson ideas allow the teachers to build ideas off of other educators and figuring out how to reach the students as a team. It is awesome to me that teacher are working together to help other teacher to benefit the students. They are posting their creative ideas that worked for them within their classroom. This is a great source to gain ideas on how to incorporate technology with a wide variety of subjects.

image

To fully have access to these lessons you need to subscribe to these lessons. The first lesson that jumped out to me was was a lesson that within primary science, called Endangered Animals Writing Project. Some of the parts within the lesson you have to purchase to have access to the information. Their are very resources such as iMovie, interactive whiteboards, and keynote all apps that we have had experience with.

image

There are also resources for physical education. I checked out the lesson about Organic PE: Basketball. I never realized how technology could be used during the physical education. However instead of just explain the rules to a knew game you could use an interactive white board. iMovie was also a remorse that was being used through this folder as well. There were also apps that could be download that could be beneficial to physical education teachers.

These next group of lessons that I opened was the Create a Toy Challenge. This was a challenge for schools to collaborate with a local organization, such as a company that teaches stem. The challenge is to create a toy that follows a procedure. Students must be able to be knowledge about the toy as well as be able to assemble and dissemble the toy. This is a lesson that has a lot hands on learning incorporated within these lesson. Very awesome idea for teachers to incorporate.

One Best Thing

ONE BEST THING

The book that jumped out to me to read was “Student as Teacher” Professional Learning Workshops by Students Experts. There were one hundred and four free books to choose from so it was hard to narrow it down to just three books that jumped out to me. These books were created by Apple Distinguished Educators. Each of these books provided valuable information that teachers can utilize within their classroom by using the information within units and lessons. Other educators use these as a resource for tips on how to plicate. These books are a key resourse for educators. The purpose of these books is to integrate technology into the classroom as much as possible. These books advocate the use of apple products to help students focus on what they are learning. This books can all be found within the ibooks app. by simply searching “One Best Thing.”

image

The book I choose to read talked about allowing the students the oppertunity to become leaders with technology. Students are now creating their own lessons by using workshops and tutorials. This type of teaching strategy allows the students to discover their own learning. The teacher is facilitating rather than lecturing. This is done with little teacher support that way the student can discover what they are learning. The goal of this strategy is to provide and open learning community between the teachers and the students. Students present what they have been working on through workshops that way other students are also benefitting from every students achievement.

image

The students utilize the the following apps: iMovie, garageband, iWeb, keynote, iPhoto, ibooks, author and the list goes on and on. Students are expected to deliver a 30 minute workshop done in front of their peers. They walk their peers on what the did within that app. These workshops are student instructed only. There has been great achievement by using this specific teaching method, by showing high engagement from the students.

image

It was amazing to me what these students are able to do with the technology that is provided to them. Teaching within a classroom is changing technology is taking over the classroom and benefitting the students greatly. It is important for all teachers to utilize technology as much as possible within the classroom. Most schools will be one to one iPads before we know it. Some of the other books that caught my attention was Kids connect: Student-Led Technology Conferences and Perfecting Portrait Photography: Better Photos in the Classroom. These books are free and they will help me to be a more informed teacher. I plan to utilize this resource they are completely free and beneficial.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE APP

The app was very easy to use overall. You are able to select different themes that set the mood for your movie. There also is music that you could utilize as background music during various parts of your movie, or throughout your whole movie. iMovie allows various choices wether you prefer to use pictures or different clip recordings. You can also edit these clips. IMovie allows you to do voice recording over various clips and pictures. You can’t delete these records and replace them with other information very easily. I movie is very easy to use. However I don’t know if I would use this app within the classroom because it is very time consuming. With looking up all my information and adjusting the pictures with the recordings they way that I believed the information fit the best took me about three hours to create an informational video that was a little over three minutes. Overall I think the app is awesome just not for me or my classroom.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE APP

The app was extremely simple to use. I discovered all the imformation that I wanted to include within my story and was prepared before opening the app. I also saved pictures as well. The picture placement and the voice recordings only took me about ten minutes. It was very convent if you messed up you would just record over your previous recording. You didn’t have to delete or start over at all. This app would be very easy to utilize within my classroom. I think digital storying telling would be a great way for all students to learn. You could even provide the text so students could follow along with the voice recording. This would accommodate all the different styles of learning. Students could create their own digital story as well. I created a digital story about trees. It is linked below.

Week 7 Blog Reflection

imageThe blog I decided to discover this week was “Upper Grades are Awesome.k” This website was created by teacher whom teaches the upper grades and love what she does. The main reason I decided to view this blog was because I pinned in on pintrest a few months ago. I have never really had any desire to teach the upper grades. I imagine myself teaching anywhere from k-2nd grade. I was hoping to gain some more information about the upper grades by viewing this blog.

image

The first thing that I noticed about this blog was the theme. The colors are very friend and I really liked the font choices that she used. What I learned by reading her blog was an appropriate way to hand out papers. I have never really put much thought into how I would be passing back papers within my own classroom. She talked about how she would have a few papers graded and have a few different students pass them back. However as I read in the blog she brought some issues up with this method that I have not really thought about. If you have the students pass other students work back then students will know what their peers received on certain assignments. Also she discovered that it was a waste of valuable instruction time that could be utilized. So she came up with a filing system to had back papers she simply made a create with file folders, and labeled each students name on the folder. Then she files the students work away and then the students can get their work when they are gathering their things to go home.

image

I think that this system would be a great system for passing back papers for the upper grades. If I do happen to teach upper grades I think that I would use this system for passing back graded assignments, or a system much like this one. However with the grades that I have in mind to teach currently I think that it might not work as smoothly as the other grades. The file folders could cause confusion and have the students accidentally taking home the wrong work.

image

Overall I really enjoyed reading the blogs that were posted within this blog. She provided really beneficial ideas that she uses within her classroom. I also felt like her blogs were very relaxed and fun to read. I could relate and understand where she was coming from. I will defiantly be using this blog as a resource for helpful classroom tips whenever I start teaching.

Week 6 Blog Reflection

imageThe blog that I choose to review this week was “Moving at the speed of Creativity” this blog was created by Wesley A Fryer. Throughout this site Wesley Fryer strives to be a great resources for teachers who are wanting to inspire their students digitally. Mr. Fryer updates dozens of videos that explain how to use different apps, websites, and software application that can be utilized throughout the classroom.

image

This Blog is organized by multiple different tabs to help you navigate throughout the whole website. There are many different categories such as; Video Library, Books, Keynotes, Breakout Sessions, Workshops, Presentation Handouts, Videoconferences, My Digital Footprint. As you can see this blog has a wide varied of information that can be discovered.

image

Within the books tab Mr. Wesley Fryer has provided numerous books that would be beneficial to many teaching who are seeking more knowledge about technology. He also provides where you can purchase these books and how they could benefit you as an educator. At the bottom of the books tab there is a link that you can click to have Mr. Fryer speak at an event or workshop. Or where he may be speaking.

image

Throughout this blog the actual blog portion of this site provides valuable information about different apps that are being used within the classroom just as podcast within your classroom. This app is designed to get you students interacting with technology. They are viewing the lessons right in front of them. This allows the student to personalize their learning. Every student will experience this differently. All of the blogs that I opened had very valuable information that was very motivating to incorporate this new ideas within my classroom.

Week 5 Reflection-TechEdge

image

Tech Edge, iPads in The Classroom- Episode 129: More Early Childhood Apps – The episode that I choose to watch and learn about was NearPod you can either create you lesson on your own or you can shop at the store and use a lesson that is already created. There are numerous different options with the lesson plan. You select the lesson that goes with your unit. Then each student will have this right in front of them on their own device. It is an interactive lesson that students can learn in a hands on way. The teacher is able to see what every student has on their iPads and the work that they are doing with this particular lesson. They recommend that you use this a few times that way the students become comfortable with this particular learning style.

image

Tech Edge, iPads in the Classroom- Episode 137: Cool Collaborative Apps– This episode talked about an app called post-it. Allows group work to be able to share their work with one another. The students write information on a post-it note then take a picture of the note and then it allows it to be created on a specific board. Students are able to see other student post-it if the select the share option. These apps could be used as simple as what did you find was the most important part of the lesson. have the students write town one sentence and then the teacher would be able to formatively assess what the students learned through that lesson. I feel like this would be a fun beneficial app to use within the classroom.

image

image

The last episode that I watched was called Tech Edge, iPads in the Classroom- Episode 126: Faculty Apps- This episode talked about what to be prepared for with having students use iPads for the first time within the classroom. The episode talked about “google hangouts” allow the students to meet with their teacher about different questions. You can make a call, send a message and even send a document. This app would be beneficial to use if you were maybe teaching online classes. This episode also talked about maybe using Skype or FaceTime. Using this type of communication you can still provide the support that your students might need. I don’t think that I will need to use this type of communication method because I am wanting to teacher kindergarten or first grade. They would not have the access or the need to get ahold of me for video chat. I would be interacting with my students every day if they had questions. Although maybe the parents would like to use one of these methods for communication.

This app also gives you the option of typing text on pages that you could already have ready when flipping to the next page. This option helped me stay on task and know what I would be talking about on that specific page. This app also provides numerous educreations that are already lesson ready in all of the subjects. This helps to get ideas on how you could apply technology to the multiple different subjects within the the classroom. I think that I will defiantly utilize this app with in my classroom. Very easy to use and does not take that much preparation time.

What I liked about the app

The app was very easy to use the templates were all great and would work with a wide varied of information. This app would be awesome to use to introduce a unit. It was simple to use and and not very time consuming. It would be an effective way to motivate the students to start learning. I will defiantly be incorporating this app within my classroom. It would be a great way to change things up and try something new.

image

What I didn’t like about the app

I didn’t like that the trailer pictures were set to a certain amount of seconds. It was hard to determine what pictures I wanted where. Also their wasn’t very much space for text throughout the text either.
